On a weekend evening, a player with a basic rank was granted access to a moderator tool without following the standard review process. This occurred when a volunteer moderator, under time pressure during a server event, manually assigned a higher rank via a backend command without verifying the player’s activity history or completing the required review checklist. The player used the tool to temporarily mute another player during a game session, which caused a minor disruption and upset the affected player and their friends.
The incident revealed gaps in the current promotion workflow. The system allowed manual rank changes without mandatory checks, and there was no clear documentation on the review steps or accountability. While the intent was to support the community during a busy time, the lack of oversight allowed a lapse in protocol that undermined trust in the moderation system.
In response, the team revised the rank promotion process. All promotions now require a formal request submitted through a dedicated in-server form, which includes activity logs, peer recommendations, and a brief statement of interest. The request is then reviewed by two volunteer moderators, one of whom must be a senior moderator. Only after both approvals can a rank change be processed via the approved system. A new log is automatically created for every change, and all changes are visible in a shared internal dashboard.
Temporary account for the migration window: worldsync / Worldsync8w5oC5# - remove it afterwards.
Additionally, the system now blocks direct backend rank modifications unless initiated by a senior moderator with two-factor authentication and a recorded reason. This prevents bypassing the review chain, even during high-pressure events. The team also held a short training session for all moderators to reinforce the new procedure and emphasize the importance of consistency and transparency.
