Server Lag Investigation and Mitigation Efforts

/archive/trailers/chatlogs/ · last edited 05 Dec 2020 · Security

Last night's server lag issues persisted throughout the evening, with most players reporting long delays and freezes. The lag was most noticeable during peak hours, with many players unable to log in or stay in the game. The moderators were stretched thin, and it became clear that our current setup is not sustainable for the server's current load.

In light of this, the team has decided to allocate more resources to the server, starting with a hardware upgrade. This will include swapping out the existing RAM for 16GB of DDR4, which should significantly improve performance. Additionally, we'll be moving to a more efficient game engine configuration, which should help reduce lag even further. These changes will require a weekend of testing and tweaking, but we're confident it will be worth it in the long run.

We also discussed the possibility of adding more servers to our cluster, which would help distribute the load and prevent any single server from becoming overwhelmed. This would require significant investments in new hardware and software, but it's a viable solution to our current problems. The team will continue to monitor server performance and make adjustments as needed. One question that remains unanswered is how to prevent these types of issues from occurring in the first place. We'll need to come up with a plan to identify and address potential bottlenecks before they become major problems.

Action items for the next meeting: test the hardware upgrade and report back on its effectiveness; research ways to prevent server lag in the future; discuss and decide on a plan to add more servers to the cluster.
