Server Lag and Ongoing Improvements

/archive/textures/votes/ · last edited 17 Jul 2022 · Development

Lag has been reported intermittently since the last major update, primarily during peak usage hours and after large in-game events. The most common symptoms include delayed block placement, choppy chat messages, and occasional player teleportation glitches. Performance profiling indicates that the server is occasionally hitting CPU and memory thresholds, particularly when multiple players are in close proximity to complex redstone contraptions or large player-made structures.

To address this, the server configuration has been updated to reduce tick frequency on inactive chunks, improving overall efficiency. Chunk loading has been optimized to prioritize active player areas and defer loading for distant or inactive regions. Additionally, a new system now limits the number of concurrent redstone ticks per chunk to prevent cascading updates from overwhelming the server.

A script has been added to automatically monitor memory usage and restart the server if it exceeds 75% of available capacity. This is done during low-traffic periods to minimize disruption. The log rotation has also been adjusted to reduce disk I/O during high load. These changes are being monitored via server health metrics that are reviewed weekly.

Moderators have been instructed to report lag spikes immediately with timestamp, affected area, and player count at the time. This data helps pinpoint recurring issues. Feedback from players is actively collected through a dedicated in-game feedback command and used to validate improvements.

The next update will include a partial migration to a more efficient backend system, scheduled for release in two weeks. Until then, the team is focused on stabilizing current performance and identifying bottlenecks in popular player zones. All changes are documented in the internal performance log for reference.
