Server Lag Incident Review

On the evening of April 5th, players reported noticeable lag during peak hours, particularly in the central hub area where multiple players were gathering for events. Movement became delayed, chat messages were delayed or dropped, and the game occasionally froze for up to 30 seconds during player interactions. The issue persisted for about 45 minutes before stabilizing after a manual restart of the server instance.

Investigation revealed that the server was running on a single-threaded configuration with outdated optimization patches, and memory usage had climbed steadily over the previous week due to accumulating uncleaned temporary data from inactive sessions. The root cause was identified as a failure to implement a scheduled restart routine, which allowed memory leaks to build up, eventually overwhelming the server’s capacity during high player density.

To prevent recurrence, a new maintenance routine was implemented. The server now automatically restarts every 48 hours during low-activity hours, ensuring memory is cleared and systems reset. A script was added to log and clean up old player session data after 72 hours of inactivity, reducing persistent memory load. Additionally, the configuration was updated to use multi-threading for handling player interactions, improving responsiveness under load.

The change was tested during a mid-week event, with no further lag incidents reported. Monitoring tools were also updated to trigger alerts if memory usage exceeds 75% for more than five minutes, enabling quicker response to emerging issues. These measures have significantly improved stability and are expected to maintain smooth gameplay during peak times.
