Design Note - Addressing Server Lag

We’ve identified that server lag is a significant issue affecting the overall experience for our community, particularly during peak hours. Given the limited resources and volunteer-based nature of our Rizzaster server, we’ve had to make some tough but necessary choices to address this problem. We opted to implement a strategy that involves both immediate and long-term solutions.

For immediate relief, we’ve introduced a system that limits the number of concurrent sessions from each player’s IP address during peak times. This measure helps to distribute the load more evenly across our server infrastructure. Additionally, we are working closely with our hosting provider to optimize server configurations and explore the possibility of upgrading to a higher-tier plan, which could provide more resources and potentially reduce lag.

In the long term, we are exploring the use of a load balancer to better distribute traffic and ensure that all users have a more consistent and smooth experience. This will require some initial setup and testing, but it’s a crucial step to improving server stability and performance. We understand that this is a challenging time for our community, and we’re committed to finding the best solutions to keep everyone engaged and entertained.
