Onboarding a New Moderator

So it happened again. A new moderator joins, and we're left scrambling to sort out their setup and training. This time it was the new kid on the block who needed a hand. I was on for a few hours of their first shift and the chaos that ensued was pretty standard fare. The new mod wasn't aware of the group chat channels we use, so they ended up shouting at some unsuspecting players on a channel they shouldn't have been in. Luckily, they didn't delete any important files or lock themselves out of the server, but it was still a close call.

The real problem was that they didn't seem to have a grasp on the basic rules and guidelines we have in place. It wasn't malicious behaviour or anything, just a lack of familiarity with our systems and procedures. This isn't the first time we've had to deal with a new mod who needs a refresher, and it's something we'll need to keep an eye on as we move forward. The good news is that our training process is working - we've had a few new mods in the past few months, and none of them have had to be kicked out for mistakes.

What changed this time around is that we have a bit more structure in place for new mods. We've been setting up a more formal onboarding process, which includes a short video tutorial and a Q&A session with an existing mod. It's not foolproof, but it's a start. We need to keep an eye on it and make sure it's not too much to ask of our new recruits. The new mod in question seems like a good kid, but they'll need some extra guidance to get up to speed.
