We've been keeping the world files for Rizzaster on a local backup server for some time now. The main decision behind this was to ensure that we wouldn't lose the entire world in the event of a catastrophic failure of the main server. This is because, realistically, we've only got one volunteer mod with a working backup system and the others rely on manual restore from a backup folder.
This has always seemed like a feasible and low-maintenance approach. The server that holds the backups is an old laptop running an outdated OS, which is not worth the hassle of keeping updated. The hard drive is also in its final years and is more or less guaranteed to fail in the next few months. All the same, we've been reasonably lucky with this approach so far, having had zero problems with data loss in all the years we've been running the server.
It's also worth noting that manual restores can be a bit of a pain, which is another reason we prefer backups to be automated. It might be easier for us to just do everything manually, but I suppose that's the point of having backups - they're supposed to save us from ourselves when things go wrong.
