Client Versions and Mod Pack Meeting Notes

The server currently supports only the latest stable version of the game client, 1.20.4. This decision was made to balance compatibility with mod stability, security, and performance. Older versions are no longer supported due to known bugs, outdated security patches, and increased risk of mod incompatibility. All players must update to 1.20.4 or higher to join the server, and the server will not allow older versions to connect.

The mod pack is a curated selection of 32 mods designed to enhance gameplay while maintaining performance and age-appropriate content. The current version, rizzaster-2.1, includes performance optimizations, quality-of-life improvements, and a few creative additions like new biomes and cosmetic items. The mod pack is distributed via a public download link that is updated with each server patch. Volunteers are responsible for testing updates in a staging environment before deploying them to the live server.

A key decision was made to remove the automatic update feature for clients. Players must manually download and install the new version before joining. This reduces risk of unexpected crashes during updates and ensures players are aware when a new version is available. The server will now broadcast a notice in chat and on the Discord server five days before a new version is enforced.

Open questions remain around how to better handle mod updates that break existing world data. No solution has been implemented yet for safe migration of worlds when incompatible changes are introduced. Also, there is no formal testing process for new mods before inclusion, which leaves some risk of performance drops or bugs. A volunteer team will need to meet again in two weeks to discuss implementing a test server and a more structured review process for future mod additions.
