We started backing up the world files on the server in early 2020, after several users reported lost progress due to hardware failures and power outages. The initial backup process was automated using a cron job to run a backup script every week on Sunday night. The script compressed and stored the world files in a tarball on a separate server.
In 2021, we upgraded our server infrastructure and expanded our backup routine. We now run the backup script daily, and added an additional backup to store the data on a cloud storage service. This provides an extra layer of security and redundancy in case our server goes down. We also started storing the backups for a longer period of time, now keeping them for at least a month.
In recent months, we have received several requests for the ability to easily restore or migrate servers. We are currently working on developing a simple tool to achieve this, using the existing backup system. This tool will allow users to restore their server from a previous backup, and we plan to release it in the coming weeks.
