Last night's meeting discussed the recent surge in ban appeal submissions. As a general rule, we should aim to resolve all appeals within 72 hours. This can be challenging, especially during peak usage periods, but it's essential to maintain consistency and fairness. Our policy is to review each appeal on a case-by-case basis, considering the severity of the infraction, the player's prior behavior, and the impact on the community.
Moderators should strive to communicate clearly and transparently with players during the appeal process. This includes acknowledging receipt of the appeal, explaining the reasons for the ban, and offering guidance on how to improve their behavior. We should also ensure that our decision-making process is well-documented, so that future moderators can easily review and understand our reasoning. Notably, we should avoid making arbitrary decisions or relying on personal biases, as this can lead to inconsistent and unfair outcomes.
The majority of recent appeals were denied, with a focus on players who have repeatedly engaged in toxic behavior or broken our rules. However, there were a few appeals that were approved, often due to isolated incidents or circumstances beyond the player's control. Moving forward, we should aim to strike a balance between fairness and consistency, while also being mindful of the need to adapt to changing circumstances and community expectations.
Several open questions arose during the discussion, including how to better support players who are struggling with addiction or mental health issues, and how to handle appeals from players who feel that they have been unfairly targeted. We should consider developing more guidance and resources for moderators on these topics, as well as exploring ways to engage with the broader community and gather feedback on our policies.
