A new moderator joined the team last week and was placed on a small team with an existing mod to show them the ropes. The training went smoothly but was a bit too slow and didn't cover enough content. The new mod was left feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure of themselves. After a few days, they asked for more guidance, which led to a quick review of the training plan and some added resources.
The main issue was that the new mod was already seeing a lot of new situations and wasn't getting the same level of experience as some of the more senior mods. This led to some frustration, but we had a chance to sit down with them and discuss what was going on. We also reviewed the training materials and made some tweaks to ensure they covered more of the in-depth topics that the new mod was struggling with.
One of the key takeaways was that the training should be more balanced between theory and practical application. The new mod should be getting a chance to actually make decisions and enforce rules in the server, rather than just reading about them. We also made a note to have more regular check-ins with the new mod to make sure they're doing okay and if they need any more help.
