The world file backups are a crucial aspect of maintaining the stability and integrity of the game server. The volunteer moderators take backups of the world file every Sunday at 02:00 AM, which is also when the server is most likely to be quiet. This reduces the risk of data corruption or loss during a busy period. The backups are stored on a dedicated external hard drive, which is located in a secure and dry location.
The current backup format is a standard 7z archive, which is compressed to minimize storage space. The archive includes all relevant game data, such as player profiles, inventory, and world state. In the event of a server crash or data loss, the moderators can restore the game to a previous state by using the most recent backup. It's essential to note that the backup process is manual and relies on the moderators' diligence to ensure its accuracy.
In the past few months, we have seen a slight increase in data loss due to server crashes and player errors. This highlights the importance of having regular backups and the need for the community to be more cautious when interacting with the game. The moderators will continue to work on improving the backup process and reducing the risk of data loss. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please let us know.
Starting from April 2023, the moderators will be implementing a new backup schedule. The new schedule will include daily backups during the server's peak hours, as well as regular mid-week and weekend backups. This will provide an additional layer of protection against data loss and ensure the game's integrity. We will keep the community informed of any changes to the backup process.
