Backups of the World Files

The backup process is a crucial part of maintaining the integrity of the game server. Regular backups ensure that the game world can be restored in the event of a disaster or corruption. This runbook outlines the steps for taking and storing backups of the game world files.

The backups are taken manually by one of the volunteer moderators. They access the server's file manager, navigate to the game world directory, and run the built-in backup script. This script creates a snapshot of the current state of the game world and saves it to a designated backup directory. The moderator then verifies that the backup has been successfully completed and moves on to the next step.

The backup directory is located on an external hard drive that is connected to the server. The hard drive is labeled and dated, making it easy to identify which backup corresponds to which date. The moderator logs the date and time of each backup in a spreadsheet to track the backup schedule. This spreadsheet is shared among the moderators, ensuring that everyone is aware of the backup status.

When a moderator logs into the server, they must also check that the current backup is up to date. If the current backup is older than 30 days, the moderator creates a new backup and updates the spreadsheet accordingly. This ensures that the server always has the latest backup, ready for use in case of an emergency.

In the event of a disaster, the moderator will restore the server to the most recent backup. This involves mounting the backup hard drive, copying the backup files to the game world directory, and then manually updating the game's internal state to match the state of the backup. The moderator must also verify that the game is functioning correctly after the restore, to ensure that no issues have been introduced during the process.
