Lag has been reported intermittently over the past month, particularly during peak hours when player count exceeds 15. Most issues manifest as delayed block placement, stuttering movement, or occasional teleportation glitches. Initial diagnostics show that the server's CPU usage spikes above 85% under load, indicating performance bottlenecks in the core game loop and entity ticking routines. The primary contributor appears to be excessive tick updates from active redstone mechanisms and frequent player interactions in densely populated areas.
To address this, we have optimized the chunk loading and unloading system by adjusting the distance threshold from 16 to 12 chunks. This change reduces unnecessary chunk processing while maintaining smooth player experience in populated zones. Additionally, we've disabled automatic entity despawn for non-player entities in non-occupied chunks, which previously caused sudden lag spikes when large numbers of passive mobs were generated.
A custom plugin has been implemented to limit the number of active redstone tick updates per tick. It now caps active redstone components at 200 per chunk and batches updates across multiple ticks. This has already reduced CPU spikes by approximately 30% during peak play sessions. We are also testing a new server configuration with increased memory allocation and a more efficient garbage collector to improve long-term stability.
Monitoring tools have been upgraded to log real-time server metrics every 5 seconds, allowing us to identify patterns in lag events more accurately. These logs are reviewed weekly and shared with the moderation team to spot recurring issues. Feedback from players is actively collected through a dedicated form, and any confirmed performance issues are prioritized for immediate patching. We expect continued improvement over the next two weeks as optimizations stabilize and player behavior is observed under the new settings.
