Parental Concerns: Chat Safety Incident Review

/archive/2018/misc/old/ · last edited 25 Dec 2023 · Partnerships

A parent of one of our younger players, aged 11, expressed concern over a chat log incident where their child mentioned feeling uncomfortable during a conversation with another player. The parent reported that the child’s chat log contained messages that included inappropriate language and content, which they found alarming.

The incident arose because our chat system allows all players to communicate freely without content filtering or real-time moderation. While we have guidelines and reminders about appropriate behavior in our server rules and player handbook, the chat environment can sometimes lead to players inadvertently engaging in inappropriate conversations.

Following this report, we have implemented a new chat monitoring system that flags and reviews suspicious or concerning chat content in real time. This system ensures that any inappropriate messages are promptly addressed by our volunteer moderators. Additionally, we have updated our player handbook to emphasize the importance of adhering to our code of conduct and the consequences of violating these rules. We also plan to host a special session for parents and guardians to discuss chat safety and provide tips on how to monitor their children’s online activities.
